Story of The Four Dragons and the Jade Emperor

Long ago, in ancient China, the land suffered from a severe drought. The rivers dried up, crops withered, and the people faced starvation. Seeing their plight, the Four Dragons—Long Dragon, Yellow Dragon, Black Dragon, and Pearl Dragon—watched from their home in the Eastern Sea and were moved by compassion.

“We must do something,” said Long Dragon. The others agreed and decided to plead with the Jade Emperor, ruler of Heaven, Earth, and Sea, to send rain to save the people.

Flying to the Heavenly Palace, they bowed before the Jade Emperor and explained the dire situation on Earth. “Great Emperor,” Long Dragon said, “the crops have shriveled, and the people are suffering. We beg you to send rain.” The Jade Emperor frowned but promised rain would come the next day. Relieved, the dragons returned to the sea. However, days passed without a single drop of rain. The Jade Emperor had been distracted by other celestial matters and forgotten his promise.

Unable to endure watching humanity suffer any longer, Long Dragon proposed a bold plan: “Let us scoop water from the sea and spray it over the land ourselves.” The other dragons hesitated but ultimately agreed, knowing they might face punishment for defying Heaven’s authority.

Together, they flew into the sky carrying seawater in their mouths and sprayed it across the earth. The skies darkened as clouds formed, and soon rain poured down over the land. The people rejoiced as their crops revived and rivers swelled with life-giving water.

However, their act of defiance did not go unnoticed. The god of the sea reported their actions to the Jade Emperor. Furious at their disobedience, he summoned his heavenly generals and soldiers to capture them. Outnumbered by celestial troops armed with divine chains, the dragons were swiftly captured and brought before the Jade Emperor in his throne room.

His voice thundered as he rebuked them: “You dared defy my will! You disturbed the balance of yin and yang! The seas are mine to command—not yours!” The dragons defended themselves, saying they acted out of compassion for humanity’s suffering. But their explanation did not sway him; his pride in maintaining order outweighed their noble intentions.

As punishment for their insolence, he ordered the Mountain God to imprison them under four mountains so they could never escape or roam freely again. Using his powers, the Mountain God summoned four massive peaks that pressed down upon each dragon.

Even in captivity, their love for humanity remained unwavering. Determined to continue helping people despite their punishment, they transformed themselves into rivers: Long Dragon became the Yangtze River (China’s longest river). Yellow Dragon became the Yellow River (the cradle of Chinese civilization). Pearl Dragon became the Pearl River (vital to southern China). Black Dragon became the Amur River (marking China’s northern boundary).

The people marveled at these great rivers that brought life to their lands but remained unaware of the dragons’ sacrifice.
